Introduction to Nerikomi: A 3 week course
Discover the beautiful art of Nerikomi in this hands-on 3-week pottery course designed for beginners and those with experience of Nerikomi who want to explore it more. If you have been to one of my workshops before and got the Nerikomi bug this is for you!
Nerikomi is a decorative ceramic technique that involves colouring clay and layering it to create striking patterns that run throughout the piece. Over three relaxed evening sessions, you'll learn how to create your own coloured clay, build unique patterned forms, and develop the skills needed to create beautiful Nerikomi ceramics.
What You'll Learn
Week 1: Foundations of Nerikomi
Introduction to Nerikomi techniques and processes
How to colour your own clay using ceramic stains
Understanding stain percentages and colour mixing
Choosing suitable clay bodies for Nerikomi
Tips for preventing cracks, lamination and drying issues
Planning your designs and beginning your first piece
Week 2: Pattern Building & Making
Develop and refine your Nerikomi techniques
Explore layering, striping and pattern construction
Continue building your work with individual guidance
Opportunity to start a second or third piece if time allows
Week 3: Finishing & Refinement
Cleaning and refining surfaces
Revealing and enhancing patterns
Final construction and finishing details
Preparing work for firing and glazing
What's Included
Three weekly evening classes
A small group
All coloured clay materials and ceramic stains
Up to 3kg of clay per participant
A little Nerikomi booklet with suppliers I use, reminders of stains, processes and tips
Bisque firing
Transparent glaze application
Glaze firing
Collection of your finished work once firing is complete
This course is intentionally kept small to allow for more one-to-one guidance throughout the making process. A great opportunity to use my studio space like your own, have the creative freedom to work on any ideas in your head and learn lots of Nerikomi tricks that took me years to learn!
Suitable for beginners and those with some pottery experience.
Additional clay: £5 per kg
Large pieces requiring extra kiln space: £10–£20 each depending on size
